Honda Recalls Faulty Tires Linked To Pilot And Passport
Honda recently announced the recall of over 1,000 vehicles related to faulty tires on their Honda Pilot and Passport models. Models built in 2019 and 2020 appear to have the problem. Honda believes that the tires could rupture while in motion. For those of you who have read our blog posts in the past, that would be quite bad and easily lead to a fatal accident.
The Hondas are equipped with Continental tires that may lose air, suffer tread separation, or suffer from a violent sidewall failure. The ensuing blowout would cause the car to start pulling in the direction of the blown tire. Most drivers in this situation, attempt to right their vehicle by turning the wheel in the opposite direction. This often results in rollover accidents and fatalities.
Continental tires
Continental Tire is a German-based company that manufactures tires, often for foreign auto manufacturers. While all companies occasionally produce defective tires, Continental has been involved in several lawsuits, some of which involved the death of the plaintiff.
In one case, a driver was killed when his tire blew out. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of two family members who lost their mother, father, and a 4-year-old brother in the crash. Two more people died and two children suffered serious injuries. The incident occurred when a Continental tire suffered tread separation on a Ford F150. An investigation conducted after the incident determined that one of the rear tires suffered tread separation while the pickup was in motion. The resulting accident led to the deaths of several people.
It’s important to understand that a company like Continental produces millions of tires each year and of those, only a handful have a serious defect that could cause a fatal accident. However, these tires are believed to have been manufactured with a defect and were thus subject to recall. A separate recall issued in November of 2020 also targeted Continental tires for a similar tread failure issue. In that incident, GM was required to recall 7,500 vehicles because there was a chance the tire could blow out. In February of 2021, Continental recalled nearly 10,000 tires because there was a chance that the treads could fail resulting in injury or death.
Tire liability lawsuits
While the most common cause of tire failure remains improper maintenance on the tires by the driver, a tire manufacturer would be expected to pay out if their tire failed causing injury to the driver or other drivers on the road. Tire liability lawsuits are product liability lawsuits and plaintiffs do not need to prove negligence when trying these types of lawsuits. They need only prove that the defective product caused their injuries.
